Education research jobs can cover early childhood education through to university education. They can focus on a particular discipline such as medical education research or physics education research or they can focus on the ways in which learners learn, improving teaching practices, utilizing technology to improve learning outcomes, and developing improved curricula.

Any aspect of education practice is a prime target for education research. Because education is such an important aspect of modern societies, there will always be a need for education researchers in their various forms. Although you may need to seek funded research projects as in other areas of academic research, you are also far more likely to find well paid advertised jobs in this area which are not dependent on research grants and special funding.

It is not uncommon for education researchers to have begun their careers in specific disciplines such as science, social sciences, or medicine. Many academics specializing in these areas have researched and taught in their specific disciplines before pursuing higher studies in education. From this platform they have leapt into the very different waters of education research and many of them have loved it so much they have decided to make it there career. These individuals commonly have two higher degrees, usually doctorates, and bring an enormous amount of insight and knowledge to the research process.

As with any kind of higher research, you will usually begin with a postdoctoral post before becoming a full time researcher. Most researchers also have to give time to teaching, particularly when involved in education research. Educational researchers involved in other forms of research such as elementary and high school teaching practices, learning outcomes, and curricula, will usually not be teaching. In fact, much of these researches are conducted away from academic environments. Many of these jobs are with government departments or agencies and their job titles do not necessarily use the term 'researcher.'

As with any research position, you may need to consider relocating in order to get the right job. This doesn't have to be a permanent relocation, but it is important to choose research jobs carefully so that they fit in with your overall career goals. You may also need to move where you have a greater competitive advantage for a particular position. The willingness to relocate, however, doesn't mean you will necessarily have to do so. By approaching your job search strategically, you may be able to find an ideal position close to home.

Once you have completed the appropriate post graduate qualifications and have got postdoctoral experience under your belt, you are ready to begin looking for jobs doing research that will move you forward in your career. The first place to begin looking for a paid research position is where you are. If you are completing a postdoctoral job in the field and you enjoyed the experience, discuss your future with your Principal Investigator, Laboratory Director, fellow researchers, and anyone else you are involved with. Ask for suggestions regarding job opportunities and whether there are any posts coming up with their organization.

The next most important step you can take to find research jobs in education is to visit the website of the American Educational Research Association (aera.net). This organization has an online job board listing educational research jobs, fellowships and grants for research projects, and links to other research associations. There is also a link to their journal 'Educational Researcher' which contains more employment ads. The links on this site to state and international educational research associations will be one of the most helpful resources you will find to help you find excellent research opportunities. Furthermore, you can post an anonymous resume on their site which potential employers can peruse and if interested contact you via private message on site.

A simple Internet search for 'education research jobs' will also throw up a range of possibilities. However, they will be across a number of disciplines. This information, if you are prepared to wade through it, can lead you to newly funded research opportunities for which staff may not yet have been appointed. Don't limit your search to the web; searching blogs for this information can actually be more effective. The Internet can also be used to find a job in a specific location by simply including it in your search. For example, by searching on the term 'research jobs Austin' you will get results relevant to that specific location.

Online job sites which advertise education research jobs can also be sources of suitable research jobs. In particular, those sites which specialize in research positions and education jobs often advertise these roles. Some online employment services offer further services to subscribers such as engaging in job matching and even job searching activities for the client. This can save you a significant amount of time when looking for work, particularly if you are currently employed in another position.

Directly contacting universities you might be interested in working with can also be an effective strategy. You will be directed to who to speak to and who to send your resume to. Be willing to discuss your interests in research, and what you want to achieve, and ask if there are any appropriate opportunities currently or likely to become available.

By approaching your job search proactively and using the resources and tools you currently have available, you will be best placed to find your ideal research position in education. If you go a bit further and are willing to travel to get the right job, you will ensure the best possible career outcomes.
