Profile

Description:

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities, at the University of Plymouth is inviting applications for a number of Doctoral Teaching/Research Assistantship positions to join the University’s postgraduate research community of over 400 researchers who work across a variety of disciplines recognised as world-leading in the Arts, Humanities, Social Science, and Business disciplines. The Faculty has long been a national leader in fostering civic engagement focusing on creative industries and economies, art and design practices, and social action research into the changing global societies of challenging real-world issues. Plymouth Institute of Education (PIoE) is offering two of these funded Doctoral Teaching/Research Assistantships in which teaching/research and PhD activities are undertaken concurrently. These positions consist of (i) a part time (0.2 FTE ) teaching contract at Grade 6; and (ii) a full-time PhD offered for a 4 year period (covering 3 years of doctoral study plus 1 year writing up). The teaching/research position would run concurrently alongside this period of PhD study. We welcome high quality research proposals for PhD study (which must be submitted with all applications). PIoE has a distinctive life-wide and life-long approach to Education, including research on learning from early years to old age, and across multiple formal and informal contexts nationally and globally. We have a thriving research community with a large cohort of doctoral students who play an active part in our research culture. Our key research groups are in the following thematic areas: Children and Families Inclusion Learning Outside Formal Education Education Policy Sustainable Education Adventures in Posthumanism Pedagogy and Curriculum For more detailed information, see this page on our website. We welcome applications which can demonstrate a clear proposal for a research project, involving innovative approaches/ideas in/across one or more of these research areas. In addition to the PhD Scholarship, you will be trained to undertake teaching within a relevant subject area alongside our programme teams and/or to participate in our research activities, providing research support to colleagues, as needed. You will undertake both your PhD and teaching in PIoE. You will not be expected to teach more than the hours indicated as part of the fractional post you are applying for (factoring for 8 weeks holiday entitlement). This will be paid at Grade 6, pro rata, on the University's pay spine. Research training will be supported through the University's Doctoral College, the Faculty and the Schools’ Research Training programmes, where you will be required to attend various 'research skills' modules. You will pursue a PhD degree supported by world class research teams and gain professional teaching experience within one of the areas indicated above. You are required to have a good honours degree (1st Class or an Upper 2:1) and likely a Masters degree in a relevant subject (completed with Distinction or a High Merit), and a strong wish to pursue a PhD with an original research project. You will also be interested in a career in the Higher Education Sector, specifically in teaching and research, and thus need to possess excellent communication and team working skills. You are highly encouraged to identify possible PhD supervisors in the areas of your research, and are invited to contact them in advance of making applications. Please see our Postgraduate Research page for staff expertise. If you have any questions regarding the process of application then please contact the Postgraduate Research Coordinator for PIoE Professor Jocey Quinn jocey.quinn@plymouth.ac.uk.
