The Nuclear Materials Researcher will focus on developing workflows to advance INL’s capabilities in mechanical testing (fracture toughness, embrittlement, and IASCC); material manufacturing; materials characterization (X-ray CT, TEM, XRD, SEM, etc.). Combined experimental, computational, and analytical techniques will be employed to understand mechanistic materials behavior under extreme conditions that may include neutron/ion irradiation, corrosion, and/or high-temperature applications. Additionally, work may support advanced manufacturing efforts to relate fabrication parameters with performance and material design.
','!*!Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in materials/physics or related discipline, proficiency in mechanical testing, modeling and material characterization is required. Completion date must be within 5 years.
Prior publications in materials science, characterization and nuclear applications;
Demonstrated outstanding ability to conduct research and have proposed experimental or theoretical projects that advance the Laboratory’s nuclear science mission.
Knowledge of nuclear materials, mechanical testing, corrosion testing, and advanced materials characterization techniques. Experience with a wide range of materials characterization techniques (SEM, TEM, XRD, APT, in-situ SEM and TEM mechanical testing) .
Experience analyzing and modeling experimental results
Preferred Qualifications
High throughput materials characterization methods inclusive of software development is preferred.
Ability to interface with experimental data and analyze that data in the context of augmenting modeling data using modern analytical and computational methods.
Familiarity with advanced equipment acquisition systems such as digital image correlation (DIC), acoustic emission and direct current potential drop (DCPD) considered an asset.
Understanding of reactor performance issues for fuels and materials under extreme environments
Experience in planning, designing, executing, and sponsoring experimental programs for fuels and materials experiments is desirable.
Good communications skills, both verbal and written.
