Where you fit in

The Hydrocarbon Recovery Technologies group in Shell is accountable for the experimental and modelling capabilities to create, support and execute robust programs of technology discovery, development, demonstration and deployment. Its mission is to maximize the economic recovery from current and future Shell hydrocarbon reservoirs with due attention to energy efficiency and reduced CO2 footprint.

You will be working in a team of over 80 highly capable R&D staff in the Hydrocarbon Recovery Technologies group. You will also work closely with Project & Technology Development organization and Operating Units from Shell on projects related to Improved- and Enhanced Oil Recovery (IOR/EOR) technologies.

Microbes can significantly impact the economic feasibility of the exploitation of hydrocarbon reservoirs. The area of petroleum microbiology supports the upstream oil & gas business through the development of technologies and strategies to achieve microbial control in a cost-effective manner.

What’s the role?

As Associate Research Engineer Biotechnology, your primary role is to help execute and deliver a first-class experimental workstream for the Bio-for-Upstream R&D program, which is part of the Enhanced Waterflooding Technology program.

Specifically, you will be assigned to support experimental work on the development of reservoir souring mitigation strategies, souring prediction, microbial control strategies and microbial monitoring tools for Water Floods and chemical EOR projects. In this role you will also support global and regional Production Chemistry departments and individual Production Chemists on microbial control and microbial monitoring issues.

Requirements:

We’re keen to talk to men and women with a Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology, Biotechnology or equivalent. Alongside, you will bring a minimum of 4 years of experience in an oil & gas environment working on anaerobic microbial cultivation using biotechnology fermentation equipment. You’ll have good verbal and written communication skills and are able to manage priorities in a fast-paced, international and multi-disciplinary environment.
