What’s the role?
The Bio-feedstock Researcher is a scientist role in the Bio-Technology team, responsible for leading and supporting multiple research projects. Activities are focused on delivering low carbon options and Biofuels into the market; as well as developing broader topical, project and market expertise related to multiple forms of energy. The team are part of Shell Projects and Technology Chemicals, Downstream Process and Bio-Technology organization. It seeks to solve key scientific challenges to support technologies; that unlock new business opportunities for Shell in Low Carbon Fuels, New Energies and Chemicals.
The program is focused on delivering low carbon biofuels, chemicals and natural carbon sinks into the market. The role is to define the research and deliver to the Shell businesses novel bioprocesses, which cost effectively convert renewable feedstocks to biofuels/chemicals via fermentation or anaerobic digestive routes. In addition, the role supports activities which sequester CO2 into natural ecosystems.
Key accountabilities:
The Bio-feedstock Researcher will lead research, due diligence, market intelligence and business steer on renewable molecules; that better harness energy and atmospheric carbon, through novel hosts, feedstocks, pathways and processes, including fermentation, solid state systems/anaerobic digestion.
The challenges in this role range from key and deep scientific questions to option identification and external due diligence for the businesses, in the areas of biological hosts, agronomy, fermentation optimization/scale up, solid and liquid phase fermentation to novel feedstocks/conversion systems.
Dimensions:
Potential candidates will be engaged in and lead a range of activities and projects in areas such as:
Anaerobic fermentation, agronomy, feedstock availability, bio process design and optimization and host organism research both internally and externally
Design and implementation of experimental programs aimed at producing commercially viable biofuel and/or chemicals from micro-organisms and biological feedstocks, considering wide range of contributory factors, identifying opportunities and engaging with the development of commercial plans
The candidate leads activities in support of the Long-Range Research platform, ensuring alignment of research activities to long term business strategy. The successful candidate will be expected to work with Shell businesses, engineers (as well as) with external partners.

Candidates are expected to have excellent intellectual and analytical ability. The enthusiasm to progress their insights, strong teamwork and leadership skill; as well as the ability to broaden outside of their area of expertise.
Key Skills and Requirements:
PhD in one of the following areas or related field:
Agronomy
Agricultural Engineering
Biological Engineering
Ecology
Forestry
Horticulture
Plant Breeding
Experience in one or more of the following areas would be a distinct advantage: Practical knowledge of biological process design and scale up, fermentation and agronomy, hands-on expert working knowledge of a biological discipline
Knowledge of sugars/lipids to biofuels conversion technologies, enzyme hydrolysis and solid and/or liquid fermentation (batch or continuous flow at pilot scale)
Demonstrated willingness to learn and apply cross-discipline approaches to solving problems and be happy working in a tight-knit team
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to contribute cooperatively to a highly collaborative and team-oriented environment
